Dec 12th, Work/ Day Dress

DSCN6267DSCN4331I have a meeting this morning that I need to be dressed up for- yet I also have a bunch of  errands that I will be running before my meeting- so (as usual) I want to look professional, but also be comfy enough to wander around Target!

I chose this blue jersey knit shift dress. It’s a great basic piece that every working woman should own.

I love this fabric because it really moves with your body, it is not stiff or restrictive at all. I also love this dress because of the gorgeous draping in the front. It’s really hard to see on the left- but in the ‘before’ picture on the right you can sort of see it.

All alone this dress works all right, (especially if I add a great necklace or shoes) but since it’s freezing out- I’ve added cream tights, brown (flat) boots, a brown belt and this polka dot cardigan.

To finish the whole thing off I added this cool statement necklace. As I was putting it on I remembered how a few years ago I NEVER wore necklaces, thinking they were ‘too dressy’ for day wear! Funny how things change over time. Now I feel almost naked without a necklace!

Dec 5th, Purple Passion

DSCN6175DSCN6176Unfortunately the lighting is so awful in my bathroom that you can’t even tell that I’m rocking my purple jeans- but trust me, I am! (As much as a 42 year old can rock anything! Not!)

This is a great outfit for those days when you are running around town and want to be comfy, casual and cute!

As mentioned, I chose my purple jeans, a white tank (notice the little ruffle detail around the neckline) and this cute beige open cardigan. To add some fun to the look, I wore my leopard flats and added a cute Stella and Dot necklace.

I’ve said this a million times- but it bears repeating:

I know I’m not  the most fashionable person out there. And yes, I’ll agree that this outfit is a little on the ‘safe side’.  I realize that for many people the idea that I am giving fashion advice is crazy… most of my friends are far more fashionable than I am!

But that being said, having this daily journal to document what I am wearing has inspired me to re-think my clothes, try new looks and get great advice from readers. Please remember that this blog is for us real ‘everyday’ moms who just want to look pulled together- not like we stepped off the runway (or are trying too hard to look young, hip and fabulous!). Enough said!

Nov 23rd, Disneyworld, Day 4

I must take a minute to apologize to anyone who’s feelings I hurt by posting the photo of the tie die family and the lady with the socks. I meant no harm! In defense, this is a style blog- and in my opinion- those items really aren’t very stylish. But- as many readers pointed out- in Disneyworld anything goes- and dressing alike in huge crowds can be a great way to keep a group together.

Today’s post is actually from Universal Studios, not Disneyworld!

Again, I’ve gone with comfort, warmth and layering! I’m wearing my cropped skinny J Crew jeans, a white tank (which you can’t see), my polka dot top and a gray cardigan. I’ve chosen my Dansko sandals again- and again I must sing their praises! These shoes are awesome! I will admit, looking at the picture, they aren’t super stylish, but for the sake of having comfortable footwear, I don’t care!

In my hand is my 2nd glass of Butterbeer, from Harry Potter world. If you’re planning a trip to Universal, I highly recommend trying some (get the frozen kind- and don’t wait in line to get it, go into a pub).

Oct 29th, Inspired by Pinterest

I love finding outfit ideas on Pinterest- because it makes me re-think ways to wear clothes I already have!

Last night I spent about an hour pouring over outfits ideas on Pinterest! I’ll admit it, it’s a total time suck, but also inspiring and fun!

Today’s outfit is a good example of an outfit I especially liked!

In the picture on the right she has paired cropped boyfriend jeans with a striped shirt and a tan front tie cardigan. She also opted for sky high heels- which (as many of you know) there is NO WAY I could wear.

Even though I just wore this striped shirt last Monday, I decided this outfit was so cute- I’d wear it again.

For my sweater- I’ve had this for years, and worn it several times. But truthfully, I’ve struggled a bit on what to wear it with. I would have never thought of a striped shirt- which is strange since I LOVE my stripes!

As for my shoes, instead of platform shoes I opted for my more practical (and warm) booties!

Looking at the pictures I realize I forgot a necklace! Whoops! I’ll add that!

Happy Monday- and for all you East coast readers- Stay Safe!

Oct 2nd, Polka Dot Top

I’ve already worn this polka dot top (from Target), but it is so cute, I had to bust it out again.

Plus, I thought it was the perfect backdrop for my new Stella and Dot statement necklace. I’m sure you’ve seen lots of this style necklace (J Crew started the fad), but I just got mine- and am so excited!

I actually wore this outfit to dinner at a friend’s house over the weekend. I like the casual, rolled boyfriend jean, the polka dot top and the casual cardigan. It’s so much better than a pair of mom jeans, a white t shirt and a matronly cardigan. Don’t you think?

It’s the small details that make this outfit look pulled together- the patent leather ballet flats, the skinny belt, the statement necklace…

And here’s a secret. These are actually not boyfriend jeans- they are just a pair of straight leg jeans that I rolled at the cuff a few times- and now I love the way they look (before they were too long, unless I wore heels). I know that sounds so obvious- but I honestly didn’t figure this out until recently- so had to share! Just because the jeans are not rolled when you buy them doesn’t mean you can’t roll them! Aha!

Oct 1st, Month in Review

One of my favorite things to post at the end of each month is a review of everything I wore. To me, it’s fun to look back and remember what I did- and I think it’s fun for the reader to get to see a bunch of outfit ideas all at once.

So, without further ado- here is what I wore last month! Is there one that is your favorite? Is there one that I should NEVER wear again?! (be nice :) )

Please comment- you have no idea how much it pleases me to hear from you all!

Sept 20th, Sending a Message

My typical ‘go to’ outfit for days when I’m not working is jeans and a shirt.

Before Everyday Mom Style I would have worn the outfit on the right.

It is just so easy to throw on a shirt, jeans and my Birkenstocks and call it good- however, there is nothing appealing about this outfit and the message that I am sending is ‘I take no time for myself’.

Is that the message you want to send?

Not me! I want to look somewhat pulled together, somewhat stylish, somewhat like I care!

Hence- the outfit on the left! This is as comfortable as the outfit on the right- but it is so much cuter. The blue and white striped tank is more interesting than a solid shirt, and the bright cardigan gives the outfit a pop of color. The cuffed jeans are casual- yet look a little more stylish than the ‘before’ pair . As for my shoes- anything is better than my Birkenstocks- and we all know how much I love my Puma ballet flats!

I wore this to dinner last night at our new local pizza place- and I only had time for 1 photo, sorry!

June 11th, Dressed for Success

Lame title, I know.

Cut me some slack, it’s Monday and my brain isn’t fully awake yet.

Today I’m wearing a cute dress that I bought years ago at Banana Republic. It’s supposed to get up to 70 degrees today, so I’m showing it alone on the left.

Below I’m showing a little cardigan that I will wear this morning, until it heats up a bit.

On the right is an example of a cardigan gone wrong. It’s too heavy and bulky for this light summer dress.

I’m also showing my Danskos as a ‘before’. Which, you know I LOVE my Danskos, but in this outfit, they also look clunky and wrong. The cute espadrilles on the left seem more feminine and ‘ladylike’. Plus, without the strap cutting off my ankle, my legs look longer.

June 4th, Polka Dot Cardigan

If you’ve been paying attention to fashion you’ll notice that polka dots are a huge trend right now.

For some reason I just can’t seem to join in on the craze. Part of it is that I haven’t found anything polka dot that really worked for me- and looked appropriate on a 41 year old.

Then I found this cute cardigan at Target. It’s a very subtle polka dot pattern. In fact, from the photos you can barely even see them.

Which in my mind is perfect. Sometimes, I’d rather be a bit subtle than scream ‘trendy’.

On the right I’ve paired this cardigan with my old faded jeans. It looks ok, but not very polished. My closed toe shoes are also a bit off- being that it’s summer!

On the left I now have on my dark blue bootleg jeans. These are almost like dress pants- they really don’t look like jeans. For my shoes, I’ve switched out the black pumps for snakeskin wedges. Finally, I added a cute necklace to follow my ‘rule of 3′.

Pretty simple and easy changes- but they make a big difference.

Happy Monday. Go check out my friends on Monday Mingle!

May 25th, You Again?

When I first started this blog I was so concerned with wearing something different every day. My goal was to not repeat any outfits for as long as I could… (I know, crazy, right?!)

However, in reality- that’s not very realistic. Most of us only have a limited number of items in our closets, so of course we repeat outfits!

The key is, to try make each outfit look original and different. This is done by choosing accessories and layering.

For example, the dress I’m wearing today I’ve worn several times- as seen here and here and here.

Today I’ve paired it with a bright orange cardigan, a colorful belt and off white wedges.

When I originally saw this dress I didn’t like the way it fit at all- it’s too loose and unstructured. But- it was on clearance, and you know I love my stripes- so I decided to see if I could find a way to make it work. By simply adding a belt- I have given this dress the shape it needs. This may seem really obvious, but until recently I would have never added a belt if there weren’t any belt loops! Don’t let a simple thing like that stop you from creating the look you desire!

For more cute fashion ideas, check out Fashion Friday!

I love the way this colorful belt ties in the blue and orange!
