June 18th, Month in Review

As I mentioned the other day, my life has become too crazy and busy (and to be honest, my kids were a bit tired of me being on my computer ALL THE TIME) that I have decided to take a summer hiatus from Everyday Mom Style.

So here are my outfits from June, enjoy!

Have a great summer. I will miss you all!

June 16th, A Bittersweet Ending

Hello Friends!

Today is sort of a sad day for me, because I need to stop writing Everyday Mom Style for a bit.

You may have noticed I haven’t been writing as regularly as before… I apologize for that. My life is so busy right now (like everyone else’s) and I think it’s time to take a little break.

A summer hiatus, if you will.

I have truly loved writing everyday- and sharing with you all what I’m wearing. It’s been a tremendous learning experience for me.

A pair of jeans and a blazer is one of my favorite looks! It’s so classic and easy to look pulled together.

I’ve learned what works for me, and what doesn’t.

I’ve learned that by putting in just a small amount of effort I can really change my look.

I’ve learned that I adore stripes, and blazers, and scarfs, and skinny jeans!

I’ve learned that spending a bit more on a classic well made piece is worth it (my white skinny pants from J Crew are a great example! I didn’t want to spend that much on a pair of jeans- but I wear them about once a week- so worth the price!).

I’ve learned that a great piece of jewelry can make an outfit.

I’ve learned that I like classic, traditional clothes!

But truly, most of what I’ve learned has come from you all.

Thank you so much for following me through this journey, for your kind comments, suggestions and giving me the confidence to do this! It’s been really fun!

Come back tomorrow to see my final post (which will be a review of the outfits of the month)!

And, you never know… come Fall, I may decide to start up again?!

June 14th, Reader’s Request- How to “Summer-ize an Outfit”

Today’s reader request is from a local Seattle gal- who wants to dress ‘summery’, but also realizes that it’s only 55 degrees outside.

This is a tough one- because while everyone else in the country seems to be wearing summer clothes- we in the Pacific Northwest are still faced with really cold temps.

We want to look appropriate for the season- but we are also a practical bunch of people!

Today I’m showing how I took a black long sleeve wrap top and by making very minor changes- made it look a little more ‘summery’.

To do this I need to show more skin!

I opened the neckline a bit (this was done by loosening the wrap a bit), added a white tank underneath, pushed up the sleeves and rolled up my jeans. I added to bangle type bracelets and switched out my ballet flats for sandals.

Now I’ll be warm, but also don’t look too wintery.

What are your suggestions for dressing for the season?

June 13th, Color Overload

Today I am showing how easily one can go overboard on color.
When I showed my daughter the outfit on the right she exclaimed ‘oh, no mom- way too colorful’! Keep in mind, she’s 9!

However, if you look at J Crew, or some of the high style blogs- you’ll see people doing some crazy things with color.

Personally, I’d rather play it safe with sticking to one bright color and then balancing the outfit with neutrals like white and black.

I’ve chosen a simple and classic button down white blouse. This one is from Brooks Brothers- and it is the no wrinkle style- which I love! I’ve paired it with a classic black blazer and pearls. Let the pink pants get all the attention!

Linking up with Pleated Poppy for What I Wore Wednesday! Check it out!

*By the way, I’m not really wearing this today. I’m working from home and playing tennis later- so if you see me, you’ll know why.

June 12th, Better Late than Never

So sorry for the late post today! It’s been one of those days where I have been on the run since 8:00 am.

Today I’m wearing my skinny cargos and a blue tank with a striped short sleeve vest over the top.

At first I tried it with blue jeans, a button down shirt and brown boots. I even attempted to belt it- thinking it would define my waist.

However, you can see from the photos, this outfit doesn’t work. The button down seems awkward under the vest- not sure why, but it just doesn’t seem natural.

The blue jeans are fine (although they are bunching at the knee- which I hate), but I like the contrast of the cargos better. The boots- well,if it were winter they would be fine. However, it’s June- and not matter how cold it is outside, I’m wearing sandals, dammit!

As for the belt! Yikes! Instead of defining my waist, it actually makes me look large and hippy! The belt draws your eye to my middle- and then sees the diagonal stripes covering my hips- making me look huge!

By opening the vest and then adding the pendant necklace, I am now creating a slimmer look.

Ok, there you have it! Now I’m going to start cooking dinner! Hope you had a great day.

June 11th, Dressed for Success

Lame title, I know.

Cut me some slack, it’s Monday and my brain isn’t fully awake yet.

Today I’m wearing a cute dress that I bought years ago at Banana Republic. It’s supposed to get up to 70 degrees today, so I’m showing it alone on the left.

Below I’m showing a little cardigan that I will wear this morning, until it heats up a bit.

On the right is an example of a cardigan gone wrong. It’s too heavy and bulky for this light summer dress.

I’m also showing my Danskos as a ‘before’. Which, you know I LOVE my Danskos, but in this outfit, they also look clunky and wrong. The cute espadrilles on the left seem more feminine and ‘ladylike’. Plus, without the strap cutting off my ankle, my legs look longer.

June 9th, Baby Got Back

Good morning! It’s another fairly ‘unfashionable’ outfit from me today, but as I’ve said many, many times- this is a real blog- and a real reflection of what I am wearing!

Since it’s Saturday- and the first Saturday in a long time that we have no plans, I am going to spend the day lounging around my house, tackling projects, reading my book, playing with the kids and maybe taking the dog for a walk.

That being said- (as usual)- comfort is key!

Today I opted for my black stretch pants and a tunic. To add a little color and interest, I threw on this gorgeous raspberry scarf. As with other scarves, I safety pinned the ends together (to make an infinity scarf) and then looped it around my head 2 times. Simple as that!

Yes, I know it is not cutting edge fashion, but its the perfect outfit for a lazy Saturday.

As for Baby Got Back- seriously?!

Unless you are under the age of 20 (or exercising)- please don’t wear skin tight pants with a short shirt. No matter how skinny you are- no one wants to see your backside- as demonstrated below!

Look out Kim Kardashian!
