You may have noticed this about me- but in case you haven’t, I’ll state the obvious. I love neutrals! I feel very comfortable in neutrals- and especially love wearing clothes in the same color family. The only problem is that it can be really plain and boring- as seen on the right!
In my ‘after’ look, I replaced the tan t shirt with a cable knit sweater. The cable knit adds a subtle pattern, and the denim shirt underneath is a nice contrast. I especially like the tails hanging out below the sweater (breaks up the solid cream) and the sleeves rolled up (another place to add a bit of color). As for my feet- I chose my loafers.
Now I have a comfy, warm and cute outfit- too bad I’m just heading back to lay on my couch! LOL!
I apologize- I am lacking in creativity this week- not only in my titles (‘Cream Sweater’- come on, surely you can do better than that?) but also in my outfits..
I think I’m suffering from jet lag- or writer’s block- or maybe there’s just too much on my mind.
Is anyone else a bit Christmas crazy at this time of year? Yesterday I made a spreadsheet of all that I need (or want) to do this time of year. And truth be told- getting it all down on paper (ahem, Excel) actually made me feel better.
But back to my outfit, I’m wearing another tried and true one today. I am really into this look this fall/ winter (bet you figured that out already).
I love the classic, polished look of a checked shirt peeking out under a cable knit sweater paired with skinny jeans and boots. It’s simple, stylish and totally me!
Be careful though- your sweater should be fitted- not loose and baggy like the look on the right. I also prefer the dark skinny jeans as opposed as the loose boyfriend style on the right (I love this style, but these are a just a little off).
For those of you who are regular readers- you know that for me- comfort is key.
Rarely do I wear something that is not comfortable. I’m happiest when I’m wearing something that doesn’t require me holding in my tummy, keeps me warm and my feet are comfy.
With these requirements, it would be easy to spend every day in the outfit on the right- wouldn’t it?
However, I do care about style- so the baggy, oversize sweatshirt is not going to cut it. The tennis shoes are another ‘no no’ in my book (with jeans), and the baggy ‘mom jeans’ are not the best look.
Luckily, I can still achieve the same level of comfort with a similar, yet more stylish version of this outfit -as seen on the left.
Here I have replaced the mom jeans with Madewell skinny skinny jeans. No matter what size you are- you can wear skinny jeans. I promise. Just remember to balance it all out by wearing something larger on top. Here I’ve chosen something loose and flowy, and it’s important to make sure your top covers your hips and butt.
Let me briefly tell you about these jeans. The cotton is the softest cotton I’ve ever felt. These jeans feel like sweatpants- they are so soft, so warm and so stretchy. I got them at Madewell (cousin of J Crew).
Instead of the tennis shoes- I’ve opted for my black boots. I have socks under, so my feet are toasty and the heel is flat, so I can walk all day.
For most people, Friday is a casual day- so I wanted to show an outfit that is casual- but I still looks like I put a little effort into my look.
In my outfit on the right I am wearing jeans, a t shirt and a jacket. It’s a common look I see moms wearing all the time- and let’s face it- there is really nothing very cute about this look!
To improve the outfit, I replaced the casual t shirt for a cute checkered shirt– then I added a gorgeous cable knit sweater over the top. I like seeing the collar, sleeves and the tails of the shirt peeking out under the sweater (this look was inspired by Dreaming in Cashemere’s cute outfit seen here).
For my jeans I have on these straight leg, dark wash J Crew cropped jeans- and I have replaced my Birks (I do wear these around the house) with black patent flats.
As for the finishing pieces, I decided this sweater has so much detail that I felt like it didn’t need a necklace, but I added a cute black bracelet.
It’s basically the same style outfit as my before look- but so much cuter, don’t you think?
By the way, thank you so much to everyone who took a minute to write yesterday! I loved hearing from everyone what their opinion was on my outfit! I think you all have great points- and I love hearing from you!

It’s a cousin to J Crew- yet has a little more edgy side to it- it’s not quite as preppy.
It kind of reminds me of what we wore in college… flannels, denim shirts, chunky sweaters… yet with a modern take (meaning don’t be pulling your college flannels out of your closet and thinking no one will notice!).
I went into Madewell last week with a friend to show her their fabulous skinny jeans. These jeans are truly like wearing sweat pants- the cotton is the softest I have ever worn- they are sublime.
While I was there I spotted this cute little lace top. I didn’t even try it on- just grabbed it knowing it would find a home in my closet. I love the texture of the lace- love that it isn’t too fussy or dressy- and love that it can be worn under practically anything.
Today I’ve paired it with my skinny jeans and a dark gray cable knit sweater. I like the juxtaposition of the ladylike lace with the chunky cardigan. I then added my favorite Tory Burch flats- the colors in the shoes reflect both the cream top and the cardigan perfectly. To finish it off, I threw on my pearls.
If you are going to try lace- be careful that you don’t look dated- or slutty.
I had a little fun finding a before picture (gotta love Pinterest). I’m not trying to be mean- but this outfit above right is not working for me. The sheer lace top is too revealing, the bell sleeves are dated, and this light denim pleated skirt is awful.
The next before picture (again, thanks Pinterest) is what I call the slutty look- the title under the picture was ‘nasty gal’. That about sums it up!
My jeans are a very dark denim wash- but they are blue (hard to tell in my bathroom lighting). The cardigan is a charcoal gray.
Today’s look is another extremely simple, yet stylish (in my opinion) outfit.
I’ve simply paired skinny jeans with a plain white shirt. Nothing to it.
Well, there’s something to it.
I’ve said this before- but please don’t wear golf shirts- or polo style shirts- (unless of course you are golfing). They really aren’t stylish or fashionable at all.
On the left is a much better version. I’ve got on this cute white button down shirt layered over a white tank and then added this cute necklace. It’s a super casual, super easy look that comes down to small details.
This shirt’s details are in the side panels, the breast pockets and the 3/4 sleeves.
