July 22, Camo Skirt

Normally I would advise against raiding your teenage daughter’s closet. There is nothing worse than a ‘forty something’ mom trying desperately to look young and hip… but today I am breaking that rule.

My 16 year old is away at camp in Canada this week, so I ‘borrowed’ her camo skirt to try out some outfit ideas. To avoid looking like a teenager, I am wearing the skirt low on my hips to add length. One less inch and I’d be in trouble! I also have kept things really simple by pairing the skirt with with a plain tank or graphic t shirt. My daughter would probably wear this with a tube or cropped top- but no thanks! Simple black slides or sandals complete the casual look.

I’d love to hear from you on which top you like best?!

July 9, Comfy Sweater

I’ve been back in town for 2 days now- and have been busy working around my house, and not getting dressed in anything cute (hence no posts lately) but I had to go to the grocery store yesterday and below (on the left) is what I wore. Seriously. It’s like Everyday Mom Style revealed! YIKES!

Luckily I didn’t see anyone I knew, phew! But as I was walking out of the store, I did see a very glamorous (super tall, skinny and gorgeous) gal in black cropped leggings, a black top and then a white fur shrug draped over her shoulders. I know it sounds weird, but it was SO COOL looking and stylish. I literally thought to myself ‘what the heck am I doing writing fashion advice looking like this- when there are people like her walking around?’ She was the epitome of style. And I was the epitome of a frumpy mom.

So… instead of my frumpy outfit, today I am trying to put a little more style back into my life with my grey joggers (have I mentioned how much I love these pants) and an off the shoulder comfy sweater. I’m wearing a cute purple bralette under the sweater, which adds a little sas to the look. For my feet, I’m just wearing flip flops (which I never do), but I like the way they look with this casual outfit.

June 17, Graduation Dress

Well, today’s the big day, my baby is graduating from high school. They say it goes by fast, and they weren’t kidding! Holy cow! For today’s ceremony, I am wearing this cute orange dress.

I love the bright color, the cute eyelet pattern, the nipped waist and the flouncy hem. I also love that it has pockets. For some reason I love a dress with pockets! I might need to stash some Kleenex in there for today’s ceremony. Sniff…

This dress is not too dressy, but dressy enough that no matter what others are wearing I should feel appropriate. Having never gone to one of these before (besides my own 30 years ago) you never know what people will be wearing! On that note, my outfit for convocation Saturday was fine. I was not over or under dressed, thank goodness! 🙂

April 19, T Shirt and Jeans

Sometimes the best outfits are the ones you literally throw on and walk out the door. The effortless, easy and casual look of a t shirt and jeans will never go out of style.

When wearing a simple t shirt- look for fun details to help it stand out. In this case, this shirt has this interesting twisted hemline. It adds a cool touch to and otherwise very plain shirt. I also added long necklace to break up the solid color- and then swapped out my tennis shoes for my cute pointy toed leopard flats. I went from a blah outfit, to a fun and stylish one. So easy!

It will be chilly this morning, so I’ll start the day with this cute blue jacket over my t shirt. Wearing the same color from top to bottom is a good trick to look slimmer.

Jan 21, Day Off

Let’s talk about the outfits below!

It’s MLK Day, and since I am a substitute teacher- I have the day off! Yeah! I want to be comfy and cute at the same time- and this outfit does that. The before outfit on the left is just a little too sloppy. Mostly my pant legs- see how they bag and gather at the bottom? I bought these pants at Athleta a few years ago and they were expensive and incredibly comfortable. But now looking at the photo- they aren’t flattering. The after ones I just bought at Fabletics, and they are amazing. First of all, they were half the price (I got them on sale), second the fabric is fleece lined. Yum! And third, they have pockets! Oh yeah!

Other changes I made were swapping out the bright fleece for an understated grey sweater. I’m still warm and comfy, but the sweater just brings it up a notch. The detailing on the shoulders make it interesting. It’s simple, yet there is something there. I also did the famous half tuck to break up the straight line across my middle, and switched out the clunky tennis shoes for cute slip ons (which are the most comfortable shoes I think I’ve ever owned. If you don’t know this about me- here you go- my feet hurt ALL the TIME.)  It sucks- and shoes are an issue for me. So, I swear by these!! And- best of all,  I wear socks with them!

And there you go- simple changes, but a much cuter look!

Nov 8th, Oversize Sweater

I’m feeling the need for something extremely cozy today. Maybe it’s because it was so cold, windy and wet out yesterday.

My first attempt is jeans, a white shirt and this oatmeal colored cardigan thing. However, it’s just too shapeless and dull. There’s nothing exciting about this look.

On the left is my re-worked outfit.

Rather than jeans, I’m wearing my black Sanctuary pants which are made of the softest cotton. Plus, they are very thick- so no skin could possibly show through.

On top I’ve replaced the limp cardigan with this large oversize oatmeal colored sweater. Here is why I love this sweater- I can eat WHATEVER I want for lunch and there will be absolutely no evidence of a ‘food baby’. This sucker hides all!

The key is to balance it out- since I’m going with skinny and fitted on bottom, I can go large on top.

To complete the look, I’ve added black boots, a necklace and a cool purse. I love the stud details. Gives my look a little ‘edge’ to it, don’t you think?

Do you have a favorite ‘go to’ outfit for days when you just want to be cozy, or just want to lounge around. Not that I’m lounging today. I’m working, I swear!

When wearing something large and oversize like this, be sure to balance the other half of the outfit with something very fitted!
