Nov 18th, What to Wear at Disneyworld

Over the past year and a half of blogging, one question I hear over and over is ‘what should I wear at Disneyworld?’.

Well, this week my family is on vacation at Disneyworld, so I thought it was the perfect time to share with you my suggestions!

Here are my top 5 things not to do:

1. Wear new shoes

2. Wear high heels (think of Gloria from Modern Family)

3. Wear a bikini top as a shirt (I’ve seen this on hot days).

4. Wear a fanny pack (See picture below for further proof)

5. Dress your entire family in matching outfits

Now that I’ve gone over the “dont’s” let’s talk about some “do’s”!

In my opinion, the 2 most important “do’s” are: 1) comfort, 2) layering.

The weather in Florida can change quickly- so you want to be prepared for anything! Also, you will be walking ALOT so you definitely need shoes that are ultra comfy.

Let’s look at the photos above. As you can see from my picture on the right I am wearing a colorful t shirt, cropped jeans and my comfy tennis shoes. Problem is, I look like a total dork!

On the left I have on much cuter cropped jeans (ankle length is much more flattering than mid calf), a striped tank and a bright zipped hoodie. During the day when it’s warm, I can take off the hoodie and the tank is cute enough to stand on it’s own. In the evening, I’ll throw the sweatshirt back on.

As for my feet- I have replaced the clunky (and dorky) tennis shoes with my Puma’s. These are as comfy as tennis shoes, but much sleeker and stylish.

The last item I would recommend is either a cute backpack (especially if you have small children who can’t carry their own stuff) or a large cross body purse. I’ve opted for the purse option. My kids are old enough now (9 & 11) that they can carry their own drawstring bags with sweatshirt, sunglasses, water bottle, hat, snack). That leaves me to carry wallet, camera, guide book, scarf and a bottle of water.

My aim isn’t to be the most fashionable person in Disneyworld- but I at least want to look somewhat cute- espcecially since we will be looking at the photos from this trip for years to come…

This large, cross body bag will hold my phone, camera, water bottle, scarf… the essentials!
Surely this picture doesn’t even need an explanation.
By the end of the episode, Gloria was in slippers!

Oct 15th, Head to Toe in Target

Well, I’ve done it again- I’ve dressed head to toe in Target! I started my outfit with this cute denim shirtdress I bought at Target over the summer.

Then I decided to add a puffy vest (these are very in right now- plus they add warmth- plus the bright red adds a nice contrast color to my outfit).

I then decided to switch out the denim belt that came with the dress for this cute multicolored skinny one, lastly I opted for my light brown boots!

Before I knew it, I realized that each item I selected was from Target… how about that?

A close up of the belt.
Originally I wanted to wear these booties with this outfit- but realistically, I can’t imagine being in heels all day today (I’ll be on my feet most of the day!).
Perfect for work, running errands, going to lunch… whatever your day has in store for you!

Sept 20th, Sending a Message

My typical ‘go to’ outfit for days when I’m not working is jeans and a shirt.

Before Everyday Mom Style I would have worn the outfit on the right.

It is just so easy to throw on a shirt, jeans and my Birkenstocks and call it good- however, there is nothing appealing about this outfit and the message that I am sending is ‘I take no time for myself’.

Is that the message you want to send?

Not me! I want to look somewhat pulled together, somewhat stylish, somewhat like I care!

Hence- the outfit on the left! This is as comfortable as the outfit on the right- but it is so much cuter. The blue and white striped tank is more interesting than a solid shirt, and the bright cardigan gives the outfit a pop of color. The cuffed jeans are casual- yet look a little more stylish than the ‘before’ pair . As for my shoes- anything is better than my Birkenstocks- and we all know how much I love my Puma ballet flats!

I wore this to dinner last night at our new local pizza place- and I only had time for 1 photo, sorry!

June 5th, June Gloom

We actually have a term for this weather here in Seattle- June Gloom.

After a truly gorgeous May- we have now entered into the rainy season. And by rainy, I mean RAINY.

It looks like it could be December out there… UGH! Seriously?!

So while the rest of the country is basking in the sun, we are donning our rain gear and making the best of it.

Rather than look like the picture on the right- I decided to skip the bright blue (unflattering) rain coat and tacky pink boots and instead opted for a cute mini skirt (it is summer after all) paired with my Hunter rain boots and a cute striped tank. Since it is only 55 degrees out there, I had to add a cute little black cardigan so I don’t freeze!

Even though it is very ‘un Seattle like’ to use an umbrella- today I will be doing such that!

Enjoy your day by the pool and if it makes you feel better, think of me sloshing around in the rain.

A reader asked what coat I would be wearing, so here you go! I also had to add tights because I was wrong about the temp- it’s actually 48, not 55. BRRRRRRRR!

Nov 20th, Leaving on A Jet Plane

My vacation starts today- and so I thought I’d show my airplane outfit. I’m flying to Hawaii, so I will be on the place for 6 hours, and I’ll also be going through a major climate change- it’s about 40 degrees here in the Northwest, and I’m hoping (praying) its’s MUCH warmer in Maui, so I need an outfit that when I land I can quickly change to be more appropriate for the warm weather.

Most importantly, I want to be comfy.  On that note- I went with my skinny jeans, a striped tank, cardigan, scarf and ballet flats. Upon landing, I can easily take off the cardigan and scarf and be ready for warm weather.

For today’s Before and After photos I’m showing how different cardigans can really change the look.

Take this sweater on the right, I really love this sweater, it’s like wearing a bathrobe or blanket. The problem is, I look like I’m wearing a bathrobe or blanket. Not flattering!

On the left is a much more flattering version. The slimmer cut, lighter fabric and the draping- it all makes for a better look.

The scarf will come in handy if it's cold on the plane.
As soon as we land, I'm ditching the sweater and 'hello sunshine!'

Stay tuned this week, I have some fun reader pictures/ outfits to share and maybe a few vacation posts…

Sept 7th, Indian Summer

Black and white doesn't have to be boring. It's the small details that make this interesting.

It was 82 degrees here yesterday! What a perfect day. My only complaint is that we waited all summer for that kind of day- and now that summer is over, we finally get it. Seriously!

Today is supposed to be another hot one, so I am wearing a sleeveless top and cropped black capris. Since my outfit is black and white- I decided to add a little pop of color with red shoes and a red necklace. The other thing that keeps this outfit interesting is the asymmetrical hemline of this top. It also has a gathering detail that adds interest and the flowy fabric is perfect to hide my tummy.

I love the hemline and gathers in this top.
The red shoes from Target add a pop of color. And they are comfy!

August 26th, What Not to Wear

I’m sorry but I have to do this. I went to a PTA training last night and I honestly saw a few things that made me do a double take. First, I saw 2 women in Hawaiian shirts. Seriously?! Unless you are at a laua do not wear a Hawaiian shirt in public. The other shocker was a gal in a cute floral short skirt, a cute t shirt and then tennis shoes and socks! Gasp! The horror!

To show you how bad this looks- here are 2 outfits with the exact same pants and top. In the first I am wearing my tennis shoes and my pants are wrinkly. The striped tank is pulled down too low and hits across my widest part (hips) making me look even more wide.

To change this I ironed my pants, tucked my shirt in, changed my shoes and added a belt. Simple changes- big results. I know, I hate ironing as much as anyone, but it does make a difference. As for the shoes; yes, I want to be comfortable- so I chose a wedge heel. Try one- I swear, they are actually comfortable (this is coming from the gal who wears Birkenstocks). The cute necklace breaks up the stripes a bit and the piece de la resistance is my new leopard belt. It adds an unexpected pattern- and hence, a bit of style.

What do you think?

Unless you are running- do not wear tennis shoes in public!
A few simple changes turns this into a cute outfit.
Calling ANTM!! Just kidding...
